FISHING ON LAKE CHAMPLAIN

Coast Guard -  Ice Report

18 Jan06

TREACHEROUS!! That is the ice conditions as we see it on Champlain this week. As we all know Vermont and New York have warmed up and received a tremendous amount of rain in the last few days with the obvious effect on the condition of the ice. The lake level has risen about a foot in the last three days, this has created a condition of the thicker ice started 8-10 feet from shore,  A check on Thursday showed ice depths of 6-8in, around the Sandbar and St Albans Bay, but, lots of open water and broken up pack ice that is blowing around the open water. When this pack ice freezes, it will be dangerous due to its lack of structural strength. All in all, not a stable situation.

How to survive falling through the ice.  It is very good and informative.
